The Dehjoor — Kashmir's Most Extraordinary Earring

In Kashmir, there is an earring tradition so dramatic, so committed to maximalism, that it requires its own category: the dehjoor. Worn by Kashmiri Pandit women, the dehjoor is not worn from the earlobe alone — it is suspended from a cord or chain that runs over the top of the ear, distributing the weight of an earring that might otherwise be impossible to wear. The dehjoor cascades down the cheek and past the jaw, sometimes reaching the shoulder, sometimes beyond, a waterfall of silver craft that has been refined over centuries by artisans in the Kashmir Valley who understood that some jewelry is not about restraint.

The Earring

Parushni honours that spirit in a form made wearable for today — 22.5 centimetres of silver craft, approximately 134 grams of considered construction, an earring that descends through four distinct movements, each one earning its place before the next begins.

At the top, a floral stud in 92.5 hallmark silver, its petals embedded with hand-cut white glass that glows with the particular warmth of something handmade. Below, a plain jhumka dome — the moment of breath before the complexity resumes — its clean hemisphere a deliberate pause in the composition. Then, a second jhumka dome worked entirely in chitai engraving: fine lines pressed by hand into the silver, the entire surface a field of pattern that catches light at its raised edges and holds shadow in the valleys between. Below the chitai dome, a long twisted silver chain falls — the silver's own movement, its torque giving the chain a texture that plain wire never achieves.

The chain ends in white glass floral danglers with ghungroos — the bells and the blooms together at the very base, 22.5 centimetres below where this journey began.
