The hathphool, literally, the flower of the hand, is among the most theatrical pieces in the Indian jewelry imagination. A ring connected by chains to a bracelet, draping the back of the hand in silver and stone, turning the hand itself into an ornament: it is jewelry that understands that the hand is not merely functional, that what it carries and how it moves and what it wears all speak before a word is said.

But the hathphool has always asked something of its wearer. Commitment. Occasion. The willingness to arrive fully adorned and mean it.

This ring takes the hathphool's soul and makes it wearable on a Wednesday.

The Ring

The band is vintage silver, worked along both edges and down its centre with embossing: three lines of raised silver detailing that give the band a quiet architectural quality. The kind of band that looks, from a distance, like a fine plain ring. And then you see the heart.

A single heart sits at the centre top of the band. From the heart, three ghungroos hang: the silver bells that have always been India's most honest ornament, worn where movement is greatest, where the body most expresses itself. Here they hang from a heart, which seems, on reflection, exactly right.

And from the base of the ring, where the band meets the finger on the underside, two fine chains fall, each barely half a finger's length, each ending in its own cluster of ghungroos. They do not drape across the hand the way a hathphool does. They hang below the finger, grazing the skin, catching light and moving with the smallest gesture: the reach for a cup, the turn of a page, the moment the hand becomes, briefly, the most interesting thing in the room.

The drama of a hathphool is scaled down to what the everyday can hold, and we found, in that scaling, something the original never quite managed: the ability to be worn without an occasion, without a matching set, without a ceremony to justify it.

Just a ring. Just a heart. Just two small chains that remind you, all day, that your hands are worth adorning.
